This theme is called Soule Dance, the theme this time was inspired by the performance art work “there’s no escape that I can see” by artists John Wood and Paul Harrison. The work depicts a man trapped in a glass box struggling to keep his head above the water as he tries to escape. As the title suggests, the man is in a desperate situation. This work of art suffocates me. I felt like I was there, trying to struggle and escape this small space. I took this piece of performance art as my inspiration and explored it further.

On the first page of my research, I did a survey about this performance art. The artist keeps turning his body in the water to keep his head in the oxygenated part. It made my emotions feel bad. So, I made a mood board with the feeling of suffocation in the water. To express the most direct unlovely feeling brought by this performance art.
I extracted several main elements and keywords such as suffocation, struggle, underwater. This is an initial and most direct emotional collage.

Then I started with escape magic. I watched a lot of water tank escape and confined space escape magic, and felt a sense of suffocation and struggle. In my research section on the second page, I made a 3d setup of two small boxes. Push the sides of the box to make the box three-dimensional and see the person trapped in the box. While increasing the interactivity, this device can also intuitively feel the suffocation and struggle of people trapped by objects. I think this is a good start. I am looking forward to the next work.
